Common back injuries in the workplace

On Behalf of | Sep 7, 2023 | Workplace Injuries

Back injuries are among the most commonly reported workplace injuries. Understanding the types of back injuries that occur will help you recognize when to consider a claim. Recognizing common workplace back injuries also makes it easier for you to promote workplace safety and take steps to mitigate your risks.

Here are a few of the most common back injuries that you might suffer on the job.

Herniated disc

A herniated disc often results from heavy lifting, twisting or repetitive stress. Sometimes a herniated disc causes radiating pain, numbness and tingling in your back and limbs.

Fractured vertebrae

Fractured vertebrae typically result from a fall or collision. Sometimes fractured vertebrae require surgery to stabilize the spine. The recovery from these injuries is complex and may require some physical therapy.

Compression fractures

When you work in an industry that requires heavy lifting and repetitive impact, such as construction or masonry, it can cause the vertebrae to weaken and collapse. This results in chronic pain and decreased mobility.

Lumbar strain

Prolonged periods of poor posture at work and lifting objects incorrectly can lead to lumbar strain. This causes discomfort and reduced flexibility that interferes with your ability to work.

The National Safety Council reported that more than a third of workplace injuries resulting in missed work time result from repetitive movements and lifting, lowering or exertion. Back injuries occur frequently with these types of movements. The sooner you recognize back injury symptoms, the sooner you can seek medical treatment and reduce your risk of complications.
