California industrial accident claims one fatality in San Leandro

A spokesperson for the California Department of Occupational Safety and Health issued a statement regarding a tragic, fatal accident resulting in the death of a worker. The incident, occurring in the morning, was immediately reported to the San Leandro headquarters of Volvo Construction Equipment and Services located on Marina Blvd.

The 48-year-old worker, who lost his life, was a resident of Castro Valley. State officials claim a front-end wheel vehicle was raised on support stands while the field service technician was working underneath the vehicle. According to safety reports, the heavy equipment slipped and crushed the technician.

When county firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the victim trapped under the equipment. He was later pronounced dead. They fire crew was assisted by personnel from the Alameda County coroner’s office. They attempted to remove the cadaver. They reportedly had to use a mechanical hoist to move the materials up and away from the body.

Reports filed state there were no other injuries. In an updated news report, the victim was identified after family was notified. The vice president of corporate communications with Volvo Construction issued a statement, noting that the company deeply regrets the tragic accident and expresses condolences to the family of the victim. He indicates that the business is committed to an ongoing collaborative investigation with local authorities to determine the cause of the tragedy. Construction work at the site has been temporarily suspended, pending investigation.

Losing a loved one is traumatic; however, this is especially true in a workplace fatality.
